Dr. William Anthony Rutala Ph.D., M.P.H. is an infection control expert witness from North Carolina. His expertise also includes disinfection, sterilization, cross-infection, healthcare-associated infections, outbreaks and antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Dr. Rutala completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Science in 1970 from Rutgers University and then completed his master’s degree in microbiology from the University of Tennessee in the year 1972. Subsequently, he completed both his Master’s in Public Health in 1977 and Doctorate in Microbiology in the year 1979 from the University of North Carolina School of Public Health. He served as a Colonel with the U.S. Army Reserve from 1986 to 1987. Currently, Dr. William Anthony Rutala is a Professor for the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of North Carolina’s School of Medicine, and serves as the Director of Hospital Epidemiology, Occupational Health and Safety Program at the University of North Carolina Health Care System. He is also Director and Co-Founder of the Statewide Program for Infection Control and Epidemiology at the UNC School of Medicine.
