Dr. Pontinen completed his fellowship in Interventional Pain Management and his anesthesiology residency at the University of Illinois Chicago. He previously completed general surgery residency training at Albert Einstein Medical Center. He earned his MD from the University of Minnesota Medical School and holds a BA in Business Management from the University of St. Thomas.
His clinical practice includes roles as founder and partner of Midwest Anesthesia and Pain Specialists, principal investigator for FDA clinical trials with Healthcare Research Network, and staff anesthesiologist and pain specialist across multiple hospital and surgical centers. His experience also includes trauma anesthesiology work with Doctors Without Borders in South Sudan.
Dr. Pontinen has authored peer-reviewed publications and presented research nationally in areas including perioperative drug interactions, neuromodulation, wound care, transplantation, and orthopedic imaging. His professional memberships include the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, and the Doctors Without Borders USA Association.
