He has been affiliated with The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was formerly Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Director of the Johns Hopkins Burn Center and Professor at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. He also serves as Director of the Michael D Hendrix Burn Research Center, Adjunct Professor Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and formerly Honorary Civilian Consultant Advisor to the British Army in Plastic Surgery and Burns.

He has more than 46 years of practical experience in the field of medicine.  In 2010 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Glamorgan, UK in recognition for his work in burns. In 2012 he was awarded a Humanitarian Award from the James R. Jordan Foundation and in 2013 was given the Sushruta-Guha Lectureship and medal in Plastic Surgery and Wound Healing from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He has written more than 120 peer reviewed articles amongst his numerous publications and is founding editor of one of the first open access journals.
