Dr. Roberto Cosme Heros, M.D. is a physician based in Miami, Florida. He is board certified in Neurological Surgery. He did his graduation from University of Tennessee Memphis College of Medicine in the year 1968. He completed his internship in general surgery from Massachusetts General Hospital in the year 1969. Originally from Cuba, he participated as a paratrooper platoon commander in the Bay of Pigs invasion and was captured. After his first year of internship, he also served US Air Force as Major for two years. He is a neurologist focusing Cerebrovascular surgery, skull base surgery, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and brain tumors. He is affiliated with Bighorn Medical Center where he started treating patients from 2014. After leaving the army in 2005, he wanted to serve rural communities so he moved to Wyoming. He was the Director of Cerebrovascular Surgery in Massachusetts General Hospital, and later went on to become a Professor in Harvard. He also held the position of the Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery, Professor, and Acting Chairman of the Neurology Department and Vice Chair of the Medical School Practice Plan at University of Minnesota. Dr. Heros moved to the University of Miami in the year 1995 and held the position of Professor, Co-Chairman and Program Director of the Department of Neurosurgery and the founding Director of the University of Miami International Health Center. Dr. Heros has been Chairman of the Editorial Board of Neurosurgery and serves on Editorial Boards of seven other journals. He was the founding Chairman of the Brain Attack Coalition and the Neurovascular Committee of the World Federation of Neurological Societies (WFNS). He has served as Vice President of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and as President of American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons and the World Congress of the WFNS. He was the recipient of ACGME’s Parker J. Palmer “Courage to Teach” award in 2007 and COR Vitae Award of the American Heart Association for Stroke Care in 2010. Dr. Heros has authored or co-authored four textbooks and has published about 150 refereed articles and approximately 70 textbook chapters dealing with cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, experimental cerebral ischemia and skull base surgical approaches.
