He did his Bachelor of Science from University of California, School of Public Health, Berkeley, California in 1963. Then he completed his Masters of Public Health from the same institution in the year 1965. He did his Doctor of Public Health from University of California, School of Public Health, Berkeley, California in 1994. He served the U.S. Army in active duty. Hofmann has held faculty appointments at Harvard School of Public Health, UCLA School of Public Health, Stanford University, Emory University School of Medicine, Seton Hall University, and the University of California School of Public Health. He focuses on health care administration and management consulting and on assisting hospitals and health systems with accelerating their performance improvement efforts and writing, speaking and consulting on ethical issues in health care. He authored over 150 publications, including articles in USA Today, Health Management Quarterly, Trustee, Health Progress, Journal of Health Administration Education, Frontiers of Health Services Management, Modern Healthcare, Stanford Medicine and Healthcare Executive. He was the co-editor of Managing Ethically: An Executive’s Guide and Management Mistakes in Healthcare: Identification, Correction and Prevention. He was the Recipient of the American College of Healthcare Executives 1999 Senior Level Executive Regent's Award, 2004 Distinguished Leadership Award from the University of California Graduate Program in Health Management Alumni Association, 2009 Award of Honor from the American Hospital Association and 2012 Schweitzer Leadership Award from the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), a past member of its Leadership Advisory Committee, and coordinator of its annual ethics conference for 19 years.
