Dr. Paul James Gillingham, Ph.D., is a distinguished historian specializing in Latin American history. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Modern History from St Antony’s College, University of Oxford, in 2006, with a dissertation on Mexican provincial politics. Prior to this, he completed a Master of Studies in Historical Research at St Antony’s College with distinction in 2001 and earned a Bachelor of Arts with a Double First in Modern History from The Queen’s College, University of Oxford, in 1996.
Dr. Gillingham is currently a Professor of Latin American History and holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Northwestern University, where he has been a faculty member since 2014. He previously served as an Associate Professor and was the Director of Latin American and Caribbean Studies as well as the Director of Latin American Studies at the Buffett Center for Global Studies. Before his tenure at Northwestern, Dr. Gillingham was a Lecturer in Latin American History at the University of Pennsylvania and held an Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities. He has also held academic positions at the University of North Carolina Wilmington and conducted postdoctoral research at the Institute of Historical Research. Additionally, his academic journey began with roles as an Instructor at the University of Oxford and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute of Historical Research, where he contributed to significant scholarship in his field.
