Paul Finkelman is a legal historian and scholar specializing in American legal history, constitutional law, civil rights, race relations, law and religion, and civil liberties. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and a B.A. from Syracuse University. He has served in multiple academic roles, including endowed chairs at Albany Law School, the University of Tulsa, and Duke Law School, and visiting professorships at institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania, Louisiana State University, and Marquette University School of Law.

Finkelman has authored more than 100 law review articles, over 100 additional scholarly works, and more than fifty books. His publications have been cited in six U.S. Supreme Court decisions and numerous federal and state court rulings. In 2014, he was ranked the fifth most cited legal historian in American legal scholarship.

As an expert witness, he has provided testimony in significant cases, including Popov v. Hayashi (dispute over Barry Bonds’ 73rd home run ball) and Glassroth v. Moore (Alabama Ten Commandments monument case). He has also submitted expert affidavits in cases involving religious liberty and constitutional issues.

In 2017, Finkelman held the Fulbright Chair in Human Rights and Social Justice at the University of Ottawa.
