He completed an internship in Medicine at Soroka Hospital in Beersheva, Israel and a residency in Psychiatry from the Massachusetts Mental Health Center/Harvard Medical School at Boston, Massachusetts where he was a Chief Resident in Legal Psychiatry. He also completed a fellowship in Mental Health Administration from the Massachusetts Mental Health Center/Harvard Medical School at Boston, Massachusetts. Currently, Dr. Appelbaum is the Elizabeth K. Dollard Professor of Psychiatry, Medicine and Law, and the Director in the Division of Law, Ethics and Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He also has multiple publications to his credit.
