Parag A. Pathak is the Class of 1922 Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has held various faculty positions since 2008. His academic training includes a Ph.D. in Business Economics from Harvard University, as well as master’s and undergraduate degrees in Applied Mathematics from Harvard, completed in 2002. Pathak is a Faculty Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and the founding co-director of its Working Group on Market Design.

His professional work focuses on market design, education economics, and applied microeconomics. He is the founder and director of MIT Blueprint Labs and co-founder of Avela Education, where he serves as Chief Economist. Pathak has served in editorial roles at leading economics journals including Econometrica, American Economic Review, and Journal of Political Economy. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals on topics such as student assignment mechanisms, school choice, housing markets, and public policy evaluation.

Pathak’s experience also includes technical advisory roles for education policy, notably for Boston Public Schools. He has received multiple honors, including the John Bates Clark Medal and fellowships from the Econometric Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has also held visiting positions at Harvard and Stanford.
