Dr. Mahoney previously held faculty appointments at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, progressing from Assistant Professor to Professor of Economics between 2013 and 2020. He was a Robert Wood Johnson Scholar in Health Policy Research at Harvard University and earlier served as an economist at the Office of Management and Budget. From 2022 to 2023, he was Special Policy Advisor for Economic Policy at the White House National Economic Council.
His research has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals, including Econometrica, The Quarterly Journal of Economics, American Economic Review, JAMA, Health Affairs, and Review of Financial Studies. His work addresses topics such as medical debt, consumer credit markets, financial regulation, and health care payment reform.
Dr. Mahoney is affiliated with the National Bureau of Economic Research, J-PAL, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Academic Research Council. He earned his Ph.D. and M.A. in Economics from Stanford University and his Sc.B. in Applied Mathematics-Economics from Brown University.
