He earned a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Regis University in 1984 before receiving his M.D. from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in 1993. He completed an internship in General Surgery at the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics, followed by a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Hennepin County Medical Center.
