Dr. Mercedes Susan Mandell, M.D., Ph.D. is a physician and academic anesthesiologist with extensive experience in anesthesiology and liver transplantation. She earned her BSc and PhD from the University of Toronto, completing doctoral research on collagen metabolism, followed by her MD at the same institution in 1985. Dr. Mandell completed her internship and residencies in surgery and anesthesiology at the University of Toronto, as well as a fellowship in Anesthesia and Critical Care at Sunnybrook Health Science Centre.

She began her academic career teaching anatomy and neuroanatomy at Queen’s University and later held faculty positions at the University of Toronto and Beth Israel Hospital. Dr. Mandell joined the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in 1992, where she served as Professor of Anesthesiology and Director of Anesthesia for Liver Transplantation until 2022. She has also held appointments as Distinguished Visiting Professor at National Yang Ming University in Taiwan and as Adjunct Professor of Anesthesiology at the McGovern Medical School, University of Texas.

Recognized for her scholarly work, Dr. Mandell has received multiple research awards and honors, including listing among Best Doctors in America and being named a Top Scholar by ScholarGPS in 2024 for her contributions to liver and organ transplantation research.
