Mathew N. Schmalz is a Professor of Religious Studies at The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he has taught since 1998. He is the founding and executive editor of the Journal of Global Catholicism. Schmalz earned his Ph.D. and M.A. in History of Religions from the University of Chicago Divinity School, following an A.B. in Religion from Amherst College.

His research focuses on Catholicism in South Asia, comparative theology, and global Catholic practice. Schmalz has authored and co-authored numerous scholarly works, including the monograph Understanding Our Catholic Neighbors: A Guide for Latter-day Saints (2023) and the co-edited volume Engaging South Asian Religions (2011). He has published articles in journals such as History of Religions, Asian Horizons, and Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought. His scholarship addresses themes of inculturation, interfaith dialogue, material religion, and religious identity.

In addition to his academic writing, Schmalz has edited multiple special issues of the Journal of Global Catholicism covering topics including African Catholicism, Indian Catholicism, and the intersection of religion and public health. He has also contributed chapters to edited volumes on Catholic theology, Hindu-Christian interactions, and religion in South Asia.

Schmalz has extensive language training, with fluency in Hindi and advanced proficiency in Bengali, Bhojpuri, French, German, and Urdu.
