Dr. Matthew D. Cain, Ph.D., B.S., is an expert in finance and economics, with a focus on corporate governance, financial regulation, and litigation economics. He earned his Ph.D. in Finance from Purdue University in 2007 and holds a B.S. in Finance from Grove City College in 2001.
Currently, Dr. Cain is a Senior Fellow at the Berkeley Center for Law and Business and has held senior visiting scholar positions at both Berkeley Law School and Vanderbilt Law School. He has also served as a Visiting Research Fellow at Harvard Law School's Program on Corporate Governance. Dr. Cain has extensive experience in financial economics and regulation, having worked as an Economic Fellow at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), where he contributed to the Division of Economic and Risk Analysis from 2014 to 2018. He has also advised SEC Commissioner Robert J. Jackson, Jr., and participated in high-level financial governance research and policy development. Before his tenure at the SEC, Dr. Cain was an Assistant Professor of Finance at the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame. He has also worked as a Visiting Faculty member at Purdue University’s Krannert School of Management and as an Analyst in Debt Capital Markets at National City Bank.
