Dr. Maria Josephine Barrios-Leblanc, Ph.D., is an expert in Filipino literature and Philippine studies. She earned her B.A. in Filipino and Philippine Literature from the University of the Philippines in 1983, followed by an M.A. in Philippine Studies from De La Salle University in 1990, and a Ph.D. in Filipino Literature from the University of the Philippines in 1998.

Dr. Barrios-Leblanc is currently a Lecturer at the Division of Social Sciences and Environmental Studies (DSSEAS) at UC Berkeley, a position she has held since Fall 2008. She has also served as a Visiting Associate Professor at Shih Hsin University in Taipei, Taiwan, and as a Lecturer at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. Previously, Dr. Barrios-Leblanc held a leadership role as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of the Philippines, where she also served as an Associate Professor in Filipino and Philippine Literature. She has extensive experience in academic administration, including roles as Coordinator for the Graduate Program and Chair of the College Curriculum Committee. Her career also includes significant involvement in the cultural sector, where she was the Director of the Special Publications Office and Deputy Director for Research and Documentation at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Dr. Barrios-Leblanc’s work spans both academia and cultural heritage, making her a leading figure in Filipino literature and studies.
