Dr. Lawrence J. Saubermann, M.D. is the gastroenterology expert witness from Rochester, New York. He also has expertise in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and internal medicine. He has an active medical practitioner’s license from the state of New York and is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He received B.A. in Biology from Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts. He attended medical school at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas. He then completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Rhode Island Hospital, and Brown University, in Providence, Rhode Island. Dr. Saubermann then completed a clinical and research fellowship in Gastroenterology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, in Boston, Massachusetts. He earned his M.D. in 1991 from University of Texas Southwestern. He was an Instructor in Medicine at the Brigham and Women's hospital for a couple of years before moving to Boston University Medical Center to establish his independent research program. While at Boston University Medical Center, he became an Assistant Professor of Medicine, and stayed there for five years as a Staff Gastroenterologist. In July 2005, he came to Strong Memorial Hospital to continue his research and clinical activities in the area of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. He enjoys teaching on the wards, in the clinics, and in the laboratory. Dr. Saubermann is interested in the intestinal mucosal immune system, and how it is involved in inflammatory bowel diseases, such as crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, microscopic/lymphocytic colitis, and celiac sprue. He has a number of projects related to inflammatory bowel disease, including clinical research trials with new biologic agents, testing for novel serologic markers of disease activity, and examining the effects of environmental toxins on the mucosal immune system. He is collaborating with other clinical and basic science researchers throughout the university to better understand the mechanisms behind the disease and develop new therapies. In addition, he participates as a co-investigator on a longitudinal countywide database study of inflammatory bowel disease subjects. He has few publications to his credit.
