He completed his High School in 1965 from the Overton High School, Nashville, Tennessee. He also completed his B.A. in 1969 from the Emory University Atlanta, Georgia and then earned his M.D. in 1972 from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Memphis, Tennessee. He completed his M.B.A. in 1998 from the University of Memphis, Memphis, Tennessee. He further pursued his internship in 1973 and residency in 1976 from the University of Tennessee, Memphis. He also completed his fellowship in Neurophysiology in 1977 from the University of Tennessee. Currently, Dr. Gaines is a neurologist at Ochsner Medical Centre, Vanderbilt University Medical Centre and St. Tammany Parish Hospital. He is also an associate professor of Neurology at Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee. He has numerous publications to his credit. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and American EEG Society.
