As part of his engineering practice, Mr. Engel prepares structural calculations to determine beam sizing for roof systems and has extensive experience specifying glue-laminated beams (“glulam beams”) in cold storage designs. He estimates that his projects have incorporated more than 1,000 glulam beams during his career. Failures have been rare, with only two instances identified — one involving Hronis Brothers, Inc. and another concerning Jasmine Vineyards, the subject of current litigation.
In 2022, he personally inspected glulam beam failures at Jasmine Vineyards’ cold storage room, measured moisture content, and observed glue joint separations. Based on these inspections, he concluded that incomplete glue joints led to elevated shear stresses and structural failure. His opinions derive from direct experience in cold storage facility design and field evaluation.
