Dr. Toliyat completed his B.S. in 1982 from Sharif University of Technology and his M.S. in 1986 from West Virginia University. Then he earned his Ph.D. in 1991 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has a professional engineering license from the state of Texas.

Currently, Dr. Toliyat is the Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University. Prior to this, he was the Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and the Visiting Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University. Further before that, he was the Assistant Professor at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad and a Teaching Assistant at UW-Madison.

He has additional knowledge in advanced electronically controlled electromagnetic powertrains, electric and hybrid electric powertrains for land, air, and sea vehicles, power dense and torque dense electric motors and generators and advanced sensorless control of electric motor drives.
