Hecompleted his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry in 1977 from Syracuse University and then earned his M.Eng. in 1981 from the University of Virginia and also completed his M.S. in Bioengineering in 2002 from the University of Pittsburgh. He further completed his Doctor of Engineering in 2008 from Cleveland State University.
