He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 2001 from the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, and completed a neurosurgical residency at the same institution. Dr. Oberlander pursued specialized training in minimally invasive spinal surgery, completing a fellowship in 2007-2008. He is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery

Since 2008, Dr. Oberlander has been a practicing neurosurgeon at The NeuroMedical Center, where he also serves as the Chief of Staff. He has a longstanding affiliation with Louisiana State University (LSU), serving as the Team Physician for LSU Athletics since 2013. Dr. Oberlander also holds the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve, where he served from 2003 to 2012.
