Edward Joel Septimus, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.I.D.S.A., F.S.H..E.A. is an expert in the field of Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease. He resides at Houston, Texas. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio State University in 1968. He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 1972. He went on to complete his postgraduate training in internal medicine and infectious diseases at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He is board certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and in infectious diseases by the American Board of Infectious Diseases. His current position is of a Medical Director Infection Prevention and Epidemiology Clinical Services Group HCA Healthcare System. Previously he was a medical director of infectious diseases and employee health at Memorial Hermann Healthcare System until November 2005. He finished a 3 year term on the Board of Directors of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) in 2009, and is on the IDSA Antimicrobial Resistance Committee, the SHEA Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee, and the IDSA Quality Measurement. He was the first recipient of the IDSA Annual Clinician Award. He was awarded the John S Dunn Sr. Outstanding Teacher Award in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014. He also received the Clinical Excellence Award from HealthTrust in 2103. In 2011 he was appointed to the Healthcare-Associated Infections/Preventable Adverse Events Advisory Panel for the Texas Department of State Health Services. He is on the FDA Anti-Infective Drug Advisory Group and co-chaired NQF Infectious Disease Steering Committee and is co-chair of the NQF Patient Safety Steering Committee. He is an expert consultant for the Trans-Atlantic Task Force on Antimicrobial Resistance. He holds a faculty position as Professor at Texas A&M Medical School and Professor, Distinguished Senior Fellow, School of Public Health, George Mason University. He is the chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee Center for the Study of International Public Policy and Practices at George Mason University. He is on the Board International Society for Antimicrobial Resistance and chaired the IHI Antibiotic Stewardship Project. He is the past president of the Texas Infectious Diseases Society. He is a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and Society for Healthcare Epidemiologists of America. He has published over 100 articles and chapters.
