He serves as a Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Iowa State University, with courtesy appointments in Food Science and Nutrition and Animal Science. He also serves as Administrative Leader and Director of the Kent Feed Mill and Grain Science Complex.

Dr. Maier has more than three decades of experience in academia, research, and leadership roles related to grain storage, drying, processing, pest management, and post-harvest loss reduction. Prior to joining Iowa State University, he held faculty and administrative positions at Kansas State University and Purdue University, including serving as Head of the Department of Grain Science and Industry and Director of the International Grains Program Institute.

He earned a Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering (1992), an M.S. in Agricultural Engineering (1988), and a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering (1987) from Michigan State University, after completing an A.S. in Engineering (1985) at Grand Rapids Junior College. Dr. Maier is a Registered Professional Engineer in Indiana and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications addressing grain quality, storage systems, drying technologies, and post-harvest engineering.
