He also serves as Fellowship Director in Pediatric Endocrinology, Medical Director of the Comprehensive Gender Services Program, and Education Lead for the division.

His clinical focus includes gender dysphoria, disorders of sex development, and Prader-Willi syndrome. Dr. Shumer has overseen research including a Phase 2b/3 clinical trial related to Prader-Willi syndrome, and has received multiple institutional and national recognitions, including the University of Michigan Distinguished Diversity Leaders Award. He has maintained active teaching and mentorship roles across medical education levels and has been affiliated with clinical and private practice settings since 2013.
