Christopher James Winton, J.D. is an experienced attorney and expert in estate planning, probate, and trust and tax matters based in West Virginia. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1985, after completing a Bachelor of Arts in History and Economics with High Distinction from the University of Virginia College of Arts & Sciences in 1982.

Mr. Winton has practiced law with Ray, Winton & Kelley, PLLC (formerly Payne, Loeb & Ray) in Charleston, West Virginia since 1985. He has been a Partner since 1990 and Managing Partner since 1997. His practice focuses on estate planning and administration, probate litigation, estate, gift, and income taxation, complex will and trust drafting (including special needs trusts), and elder law. He has served as lead counsel in multimillion-dollar will contests and has prepared federal estate tax returns for multimillion-dollar estates, as well as federal and state fiduciary and individual income tax returns.

In addition to his estate and tax practice, Mr. Winton has extensive experience in corporate planning, including large-scale asset and stock sales, real estate law, coal, oil and gas, and timber law. His civil litigation experience includes trust and estate disputes, guardianship matters, real estate and title issues, shareholder and corporate disputes, employment law, construction law, and landlord-tenant matters. He also serves as Special Corporation Counsel to the Kanawha County Public Library Board.

Mr. Winton is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Charleston, where he teaches Estate Planning (FINA-415). Earlier in his career, he worked as a Title Examiner with Southern Title Insurance Corporation in Charlottesville, Virginia.
