He has provided military service in United States Naval Support Forces, Republic of Vietnam in 1971 and United States Naval Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1972. He has been certified by the American Board of Medicine in 1973 and American Board of Infectious Diseases in 1975. Dr. Carling is a member of Infectious Disease Society of America since 1979. He has served as a Director of  Infectious Diseases Section, Department of Medicine of Carney Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts since 1975. He has also been appointed as the Professor of Clinical Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine since 1975. He has an active medical license in the state of Massachusetts. He has been awarded the William A Rutala Research Award in 2004, Blue Ribbon Abstract Award in 2004, 2005 and 2015.
