Nachman Brautbar (born October 22, 1943) is an American physician and medical researcher. He is a clinical professor emeritus of medicine at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. Brautbar is board certified in internal medicine, nephrology, and forensic medicine. He is a fellow of the Collegium Ramazzini and a member of the American College of Toxicology. Brautbar's research has focused on nephrology, toxicology, occupational medicine, and the effects of industrial chemicals and pollution on human health.

Educational History

Brautbar attended Hadassah Medical School at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel from 1961 to 1968, earning his M.D. in 1969. He completed an internship at Ramban Hospital/Haifa University in Israel from 1968-1969. His residency training included internal medicine at Rothschild Medical Center in Israel (1971-1973) and Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem (1974-1975). After moving to the United States, Brautbar completed an internship at the Wadsworth VA Medical Center in Los Angeles (1975-1976) and a nephrology fellowship at Wadsworth (1975-1977).

Professional History

Brautbar worked as an assistant professor of medicine at UCLA from 1977-1978. He then joined the faculty at the University of Southern California, starting as an assistant professor in 1978. He rose through the ranks to become a tenured associate professor of medicine and pharmacology in 1982. In 1988, he attained the position of clinical professor of medicine and pharmacology. From 1994 until his retirement in 2007, Brautbar served as a clinical professor of medicine at USC.

In addition to his academic appointments, Brautbar has maintained a private practice in internal medicine, nephrology, and toxicology since 1980. He served as the chief of the hemodialysis unit at Wadsworth VA Hospital from 1977-1978. From 1980 onward, Brautbar held numerous leadership positions at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and Queen of Angels Medical Center, including chairman of the department of medicine, chairman of the nephrology section, and vice chairman of the department of medicine.
